From the village of Kanye to some of Botswana’s growing Afro electronic stages, DJ Mis J, born Oteng Johane, is carving her own path in the Afro House and Afro Tech scene with rhythm, emotion, and authenticity at the centre of her sound.

Growing up in Kanye, music was always present in her environment. From gospel sounds at home to the different genres playing on radio, DJ Mis J developed an ear for music that could carry both feeling and movement. That early exposure shaped the way she connects with sound today — not just as entertainment, but as a powerful emotional experience.

Her journey into DJing began in her twenties. Although she loved nightlife, she was not always allowed to go out, and that made her even more curious about the world behind the decks. Her first setup was with CDJ 350s, where she began learning the basics of beat matching, transitions, and song selection. Under the guidance of DJ Zoski at The Library Bar in Kanye, she sharpened her craft through practice, observation, and consistency.

Musically, DJ Mis J describes her sound as Afro House rooted in rhythm, groove, and emotional connection. Her sets are not just about playing songs — they are carefully built journeys. She reads the crowd, starts with deeper Afro House textures, and slowly raises the energy until the audience feels fully connected to the moment.

What draws her to Afro House and Afro Tech is the power of the drums, the groove, and the spiritual energy carried by the music. Her sound reflects where she comes from: warm, rhythmic, soulful, and deeply connected to culture. For DJ Mis J, music is a way of staying authentic while still speaking to different audiences.

One of her most memorable performances was at the Okavango Nhabe Music Festival in Gumare, where she witnessed the crowd fully engaging with her set. It was also a personal reminder of how far she had grown in confidence and control as a DJ. Another defining moment came at GIMC AfroTech, where she felt the crowd connect so deeply with the music that she realised the movement was bigger than herself.

Like many independent and female artists, DJ Mis J has faced the challenge of building recognition and consistency in an industry where opportunities are not always easy to access. She believes local artists often have to work twice as hard to prove their value, especially when they are still defining their identity and building their name.

Platforms such as Echoes of the Wild, GIMC AfroTech, Afro Down Town, Maun Easter Experience, and other showcases are helping create space for DJs to perform, grow, and push the culture forward. For her, Echoes of the Wild plays an important role because it is intentional about representing Afro House and Afro Tech, helping position artists like her within the right community.

Looking ahead, DJ Mis J sees herself performing on bigger stages locally and internationally, releasing more music, and building a legacy that inspires young women who want to enter the industry. Her dream stages include Spring Fiesta, Ibiza, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Music Festival, with future collaborations aimed at artists such as DJ Kitty Amor, DJ LeSoul, Bun Xapa, and others.

Beyond music, she stays grounded through loved ones, familiar spaces, and allowing herself to simply exist outside the pressure of the industry. To her, success is not only fame or recognition — it is growth, authenticity, doing what she loves, and inspiring others along the way.

Her advice to young DJs and producers is simple: focus on your craft, stay consistent, be genuine, and be patient with your growth.

With one word, DJ Mis J describes her sound as rhythmic — and that rhythm is steadily echoing from Kanye to the world.

" I want my legacy to inspire young women who want to step into this industry and create meaningful experiences through music."
