At only 20 years old, Son of Simeon, born Isago Blessing Othata, is already shaping his own lane in Botswana’s growing Afro electronic music scene. Hailing from Thamaga, Botswana, the young DJ and producer carries a sound that is deep, atmospheric, emotionally driven, and proudly rooted in where he comes from.
For Son of Simeon, music has never been just entertainment. Growing up, it was part of everyday life — heard at family gatherings, community events, and in the moments where people came together to celebrate, connect, and tell stories. That early experience taught him that music has the power to move people, build emotion, and create lasting memories.
His journey into DJing and production began with curiosity. He was fascinated by how DJs could control the energy of a space and guide people through sound. What began as passion soon became purpose. Despite early challenges such as limited access to resources, exposure, and opportunities, he remained consistent, choosing to learn, practise, and refine his craft even when recognition did not come immediately.
That discipline has helped him develop a sound of his own. Son of Simeon describes his music as a blend of Afro House and Afro Tech, driven by groove, storytelling, and emotion. His sets are carefully built experiences — not just a selection of tracks, but a journey that connects with the crowd, rises in energy, and leaves people feeling something long after the music stops.
“There’s something spiritual about Afro House and Afro Tech,” he says. For him, these sounds connect rhythm, culture, and emotion in a way that feels honest and authentic. Every transition, every beat, and every production choice is intentional. His goal is not simply to play music, but to create an immersive experience.
One of the most powerful moments in his journey came when he felt a true connection with a crowd during a performance. In that moment, he understood that his work was bigger than sound — it was about shared energy, emotion, and impact. That experience became a turning point, strengthening his belief in the path he had chosen.
As part of a new generation of Botswana artists pushing Afro electronic music forward, Son of Simeon sees both opportunity and responsibility. He believes young creatives are not only making music, but also shaping culture and opening doors for those who will follow. However, he also recognises the need for more platforms, mentorship, and industry support to help local talent reach its full potential.
This is why spaces such as Echoes of the Wild matter. To him, platforms that intentionally create room for artists to be seen and heard are essential for growth. They give emerging talent the confidence, visibility, and community needed to keep moving forward.
Looking ahead, Son of Simeon sees himself growing creatively and professionally, reaching wider audiences, refining his sound, and taking his music to international platforms that celebrate Afro electronic culture. His vision is clear: to create music that transcends borders while proudly representing his roots.
Beyond the decks, he remains grounded by reflection, balance, and staying connected to where he comes from. His definition of success is not only recognition, but growth, impact, and staying true to himself while doing what he loves.
His message to young creatives from places like Thamaga is one worth carrying:
“Where you come from does not limit where you can go. Stay consistent, believe in your vision, and do not be afraid to carve your own path.”
Son of Simeon is more than a rising DJ and producer. He is a reminder that talent can be born anywhere, purpose can grow through persistence, and authentic sound has the power to travel far beyond its starting point. Start writing here...
